![]() Sometimes they were written in pencil and can be faded and hard to see there If it has the original wood grips the serial number will be written inside on the back of the right grip. On some nickel guns there was an N stamped on the side grip frame area. Lack of a serial number on the butt makes me suspect it was refinished. Hard to say if yours was nickel to start with or if it was refinished. They were produced in both a blued finish and nickel plated. On the right side it should have a 4 line address like this: Other places to find the serial number are the cylinder face, rear of the extractor star and on the yoke and you would have to look through a charge hole to see that one. There definitely should be a serial number on the butt. Based on your serial number yours was probably late 1947 to early 1948. Serial numbers beginning with an S were produced from 1945 until 1948. The guns had a name and yours was know as the 38 Military & Police. Prior to 1957, S&W didn't use model numbers.
